The Dance Makers Collective new work, DADS, is opening at Jasper’s Corner old church in Federal on Friday February 20.  The DMC have been hassling Dads all over the countryside to share their dance stories, and it’s Federal’s turn to witness the result…

Says Philip Channels, director of Dance Integrated Australia: “Dance Makers Collective is a group of Sydney based dancers and choreographers. With a fluid, collective structure DMC aims to support the development of new dance work by its members, from research stages right through to production, building vibrant and highly collaborative working relationships.”

The second stage development of DADS will be held at Jasper Corner from Monday 15 – Saturday 20 February 2016. For this production, the Collective are seeking advice from their Dads…on how to make dance. ‘Dad dancing’ is much derided, but ask a dancer’s father, “when is it ok to dance?” or “why bother dancing?” and the answers are not what you’d expect.

Enter a world of secret solo dance practices, gender bending, philosophising and joyful experimentation. As contemporary dancers take their art form for a walk back through their family history, they investigate the cultural relevance of dance and its timeless ability to nurture collective experience.

“Dance Makers Collective has imagination, thoughtfulness, individuality, performing ability and commitment. Even a sense of humour.” Jill Sykes, Sydney Morning Herald

The DMC artists will lead an open level community workshop at Jasper Corner from 10:30am – 12:30pm on Wednesday 18 February. They will guide participants through a yoga / contemporary dance warm-up, some of their our own creative / improvisation tasks, and finish with repertoire from the upcoming show. So, if you know a Dad, are a Dad, have seen a Dad dance, have danced, like dance, like to watch dance, then this is a showing for you.

The Main Event performance will showcase new experimental choreographies by some of Australia’s best dance artists developed at The Corner Dance Lab, a nine-day dance workshop program held annually in Federal.

The limited seating performance will be held at Jasper Corner at 7:30pm on Saturday 23 January.

The Corner Dance Lab is led by co-facilitators Philip Channells (Dance Integrated Australia) and Gavin Webber (The Farm Company) who bring together an exciting line up of dance practitioners, musicians and visual artists from the local area, interstate and abroad.

Local Federal resident Philip Channells said, “once again we’re bringing some of Australia’s most established dance artists together to share our creative practice. It is an important opportunity for emerging and established artists to work together and we’re really excited to show the outcomes to the community.

This year The Corner Dance Lab in partnership with Arts Northern Rivers also supported a new initiative, The Indigenous Residency Scholarship, which have been awarded to emerging artists, Amrita Hepi, a descendant of the Ngapuhi tribe in Northern New Zealand and the Bundjulung people in Northern New South Wales and Tyrel Dulvarie who is a descendant of the Yirriganydji and Mamu people of Cairns and Innisfail.

While The Corner Dance Lab attracts high caliber artists, it also connects them with emerging dancers with and without disability to challenge themselves physically, intellectually and artistically.

Catering for the event is courtesy of The Rosebank Store’s Fusion Kitchen, highlighting certified organic and locally sourced ingredients, Assamese curries, global flavours with a home style flair. Food will be available to purchase from 6pm. BYO refreshments.

Tickets for The Main Event can be purchased at the door – adults $15 / concession $10. Limited seating available.

Philip Channells, Creative Director of Dance Integrated Australia, is one of 47 recipients of the inaugural AMP Tomorrow Fund. Based in the historic rural village of Federal, Channells is one of Australia’s leading experts in inclusive dance practice.

Philip Channells is the first artistic director of an Australian dance company with a disability, and he is also passionate about supporting people in regional areas to excel in dance and performance. Philip does this through several initiatives, including The Corner Dance Lab and Residency Program for emerging and established artists, and the Beyond Technique Residency skills development, professional development, and performance-making projects.

“I enjoy working with people with different bodies and different life experiences, and showcasing our social fabric in ways that are meaningful, inspiring, and inclusive of people with disability,” Channells says. The AMP Tomorrow Fund Award came as a cash prize contribution to support Dance Integrated Australia’s work in regional NSW (Northern Rivers and NSW South Coast regions).

“To be an AMP Tomorrow Maker validates the contribution I’ve made to the dance sector in Australia. It recognises and values my work in regional and rural centres across NSW while nurturing some of the country’s best new talent,” says Channells.  “As a director/choreographer, I seek to generate excellence in the arts through nurturing a collaborative creative process that strives to place each individual in charge of their creative destination. Being one of 47 chosen recipients from a pool of thousands of applicants, the award recognises the importance of supporting our future leaders. I’ve demonstrated that I’ve been working hard towards a goal which benefits Australia. The AMP Foundation acknowledges a sense of authenticity in my practice and a commitment to the changing cultural landscape of dance here in Australia.”

DanceLab2015

Have you always wanted to explore dance but have never had the opportunity?

THE CORNER DANCE LAB 2015  is a fantastic eight-day dance program to be held in Federal in January 2015.  The Corner Dance lab is a week-long dance workshop based around the philosophy of utilising communication as a creative tool.

“If you have a desire to find your own way to move, or your own way to create movement, then The Corner is for you. It is a dance lab that will offer alternate ways to begin or to participate in the creation of dance in a fundamentally generous and open environment.”

Gavin Webber, co-founder of The Farm.

It is suitable for people of all ages with and without disability. It is for anyone who loves to dance and who wants to work in an inclusive dance environment.

This creative activity is led by two of Australia’s leading dance practitioners Philip Channells (Creative Director, Dance Integrated Australia) and Gavin Webber (Co-founder of The Farm). Together they have developed a program that focusses on skills development (disability-inclusive) and Choreographic Practice and Development in dance.

The week will comprise of daily workshop activities with some of Australia’s leading dance and theatre artists in collaboration with guest artist and musician Ben Ely (formerly from the Regurgitator band) and local multi-media artist and projectionist, Kellie O’Dempsey.

Based in the heart of the historic Federal village from Friday January 16th – Saturday 24th 2015 this dance residency and community event will attract dancers from around the country

“This event will inspire creative thinking and challenge stereotypes and perceptions of people with different life experience in a dance context. It’s an opportunity for us to share our collective experience in dance and in life with the broader community.” Philip Channells.

NOTE: Auslan Interpreters will be provided.
