If the COREM event at Mullumbimby on Sunday October 18 is anything to go by, a fossil free future promises to be not only safe for the planet but entertaining as well.  Community-owned energy is all the rage at the moment and the target for this fundraiser is to solar power the Mullumbimby Drill Hall, writes Alison Pearl.

COREM (Community-Owned Renewable Energy Mullumbimby), is our local not-for-profit action group intent on rallying all to assist in creating community-owned renewable energy projects that serve this area.  The goal is 100% renewable energy in the 2482 region to ensure the future health of this beautiful world we call home.

There will be insight and entertainment, and the program’s jam-packed with human stimuli of all forms starting with the incomparable Mandy Nolan as MC.  Our live entertainment includes the wonderful talents of brother-sister duo Gabriel & Cecilia, clown/inventor/comedian/wildman Joel Salem, just back from months of performances in the USA, and the macho man’s harmonious musclebound Russian choir Dustyesky.

If you’ve never experienced a silent (really!) disco, you’ll have a perfect op with the fantastic Electric Garden Silent Disco featuring DJ’s XFacta, Miz Boogie Bird and Kanopi.

COREM panels on the day will include COREM founders Ella Rose, Dave Rawlins, Robert Passey, Shane Schmidt, ENOVA’s Alison Crook, Mayor Simon, sustainability expert/author Katrina Shields, BZE rep Tiffany Harrison, Dr Muriel Watt and Giles Parkinson.  Various related businesses such as ENOVA, SEED, Light Touch Solar will have stalls and information at the venue, which will be appropriately solar-powered by Solar Trailers Australia and SCU’s Sunflower Solar System.

Fossil Free foods are on the menu with generous donations from Rock N Roll Cafe, Pizza Volante, Kombucha Mamma, Pedal Power Juice and the freshest finds from the Mullumbimby Community Gardens.

All funds raised will help to solar power the Drill Hall.  The fund-raised $17,000 will be used for a 10kW PV system, that would be connected to needed the mains grid, powering both the theatre and Pottery Studio.
