'Core' by Alex Clarke

It was stormy weather across the Northern Rivers last week. Alex Clarke took this beauty after he and his partner Jasmine decided a change of scenery was in order after a long day at work. “We grabbed our cameras, headed west from Lismore towards the ominous clouds that were gradually blotting out the sun as it dipped towards the horizon,” he says.  “We followed the backroads until we were confronted by this awesome spectacle of the core of a storm cell, as it began to unleash a torrent of rain.”

Photographer Alex Clarke was at home when the temperature started heading towards 40°C. “I noticed a few storm cells popping up on the western horizon from Lismore,” he says, “which put them well out over the Richmond Range or Clarence valley. Hoping to capture a cell or even a supercell, I jumped in my trusty Peugeot and headed out to Mallanganee to get a better look. I took a few photos at various spots along the top of the range and then headed down to the range on my way back to Lismore. This derelict house at Mongongarie has long been one of my favourite subjects – it’s in a very picturesque spot and on this particular day it was possible to create this framing as a massive cell was just reaching its peak to the north east.”

Clarke shot his photo on a Sony A7 with 50mm Contax G Zeiss (adapted manual focus) lens at f5.6.  HDR shot with 3 exposures merged using Nik HDR Efex Pro in Apple Aperture.
