]]> In the hundreds of times Lismore-based photographer Andrew Sooby has walked the Byron Lighthouse Precinct, he doesn’t ever recall ever seeing Ospreys – but last weekend  his luck changed. “These shots are of one of a a pair which was patrolling between Clarke’s Beach and the Eastern Most Point,” says  Sooby. “They hovered over Wategos, beaks into the strong northerly wind, virtually motionless for minute or two at a time, before suddenly banking away to let the wind push them further up or down the shore line. I caught one of them diving to the surface and drag something out, and another one from underneath, flying high.  They were truly awesome.”

Says Sooby: “I shot these on a Nikon D750; 24-120 zoom, each set at 120mm; each ISO 100; each at f.4; each at 2000sec.”

]]> Lismore photographer Andrew Sooby, of Luminous Mudbrick, captured this beautiful close up of an Eastern Water Dragon for Verandah Magazine at Wategos Beach.   “He was in the grass by one of the benches overlooking the beach,” says Sooby, “totally unphased by the people and traffic.  It was a week before spring and lizards were out sunning themselves.”

Andrew Sooby shot the dragon on his Nikon D750; ISO 100, with the zoom set at 120mm, 1/400 sec.

]]> Lismore based photographer Andrew Sooby took this stunning photograph at one of Byron Bay’s most famous landmarks – the Eastern-most-point up near the Byron Bay Lighthouse.  Says Sooby:  “I love ‘contra-jour’ shots – when you shoot straight into the light, and this shot was helped by the superb clear, dry light we’ve been having during the cold weather.  I shot in colour of course, but I actually love this shot in black and white – there’s something almost 1950’s about the gathering of the people by the rail gazing out to sea, and the contrast really lends itself to black and white.”


Andrew Sooby took his ‘Whale Watching’ photograph on a Nikon DSLR; 24-120mm F.4 zoom at 24mm; 1/800 at f.14; ISO 400. Original in colour.

]]> The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe forever changed the way children see lamp-posts.  It was under a lamp-post that Lucy and the fawn Mr. Tumnus meet – the friendly fawn, who Judas-like,  will later become Lucy’s betrayer.  The lamp-post in the snowy woods was not just a lamp-post, it was full of symbolism, and an invitation to venture deeper into the heart of Narnia.  Not that photographer Andrew Sooby had all of this on his mind, when he chanced across the beautiful view at Clunes, looking south over Eltham Valley.  “What I was imagining,” says Sooby, “is how amazing this would look from the air.”

Andrew Sooby took this photograph on a Fuji XE2 with a 14mm prime lens, at f.14, 400sec, on an ISO of 400.

When photographer Andrew Sooby was at the Tweed Regional Art Gallery recently, the moody weather prompted him to catch this atmospheric shot of Wollumbin, (Mount Warning) near Murwillumbah.  “The storm was out there,” says Sooby, “and it was a perfect moment to capture it.”

Andrew Sooby used a Fuji XE2; lens at 300mm (35mm equiv); 1/1600 sec; f11; ISO 200.

]]> Lismore photographer Andrew Sooby from Luminous Mudbrick, snapped this hot chilli and what’s left of another hot chilli. “What creature does this?” Sooby says. “They were both snipped from the same bush. We know  that there’s at least one currawong in the Lismore area which will eat all the chillis from the same bush, gulping them down whole….but whatever creature did this discerning little carve-up knew exactly what it was doing.”

This photograph was taken on a Fuji XE2; 90mm (equiv) prime lens; 1/500th at f.16; available sunlight light; ISO 400.
